Resist anti-encroachment drive

The Jeevan Bhima Nagar police have booked a 76-year-old businessman and four others for allegedly assaulting officials and engineers of the Bangalore Development Authority who were on an anti-encroachment drive on Tuesday.

Based on a complaint by Mahadevegowda, executive engineer, BDA, the police have charged the accused with assault, criminal intimidation and assaulting public servants on duty. The accused are Srinivasa Reddy, 76, his relative Viswanath Reddy, 56, and their real estate agent Santosh Reddy, 44, and two of his associates.

According to the police, the officials, along with a vigilance squad, visited a site on Thippasandra main road to remove encroachments on property belonging to the BDA.

“While they were supervising the demolition drive, the accused rushed to the spot and attacked them. They started pelting the officers with stones and tried to damage the earthmoving equipment in an attempt to stop the demolition drive,” said the police.

The officials were able to remove the encroachments after which they informed the jurisdictional police. “The accused had escaped by the time we reached the spot. We are tracking them down,” the police added.
