BU toppers to get gold-plated medals

Toppers of Bangalore University will be awarded gold-plated medals at the 54th annual convocation.

The university had made a similar promise last year, but instead gave cash prize to meritorious students. At that time, a decision was taken to withdraw some of the gold medals in cases where the amount given by the donor was less than the cost of the medal itself.

Around 800 gold medals will be distributed to students at the convocation slated for February. “The university will bear the cost of the gold medals in instances where the funds given by the donor fall short. We decided to initiate this move as we find that students who are expecting a gold medal at the convocation are disappointed when they receive only a certificate and cash prize,” said K.R. Venugopal, Vice-Chancellor, Bangalore University.

Last year, citing paucity of funds, the university had asked students to pay ₹500 in the form of a demand draft if they wished to get their medals. The notification, however, was withdrawn following widespread criticism.
