The Transport Department is cashing in on people’s penchant for ‘fancy’ vehicle registration numbers by auctioning them. A website —http://164.100.80.164/fancyappln/fancynostatus.aspx— that shows the fancy numbers available for auction was launched here on Monday.
Two series
Owners of cars, jeeps and private service vehicles can bid for the numbers, which could be from the current or advance series.
Current means a number from a series (eg. in KA 05 MH 906, MH is the series) that the Transport Department is issuing at a given time. A series has 1,000 numbers.
Advance numbers are those beyond the range of 1,000 which the department is yet to start issuing.
While the auctioning process itself is not online, the available numbers are on the website.
All RTOs in the State can see the numbers available online.
People wanting numbers in the current series can get them at the district-level, while for the advance numbers, they have to come to Bengaluru.
However, Transport Commissioner Rame Gowda said: “For us, all numbers are the same.”
Ramalinga Reddy, Minister for Transport, while launching the website, said that auctioning would make the process of getting specific numbers transparent instead of the earlier first come, first served basis system.
