A woman employee of the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) sustained injuries when the elevator at Krishi Bhavan at Hudson Circle came crashing down on Thursday afternoon. The others in the elevator, which was reportedly overcrowded, also suffered minor injuries.

Yashoda (45), a senior assistant officer at the Bescom West-5 subdivision office , had taken the elevator while going back to her cabin after fetching her lunch box from her car when the incident took place. Instead of the maximum five people, 11 persons were reportedly in the elevator at the time.

Sources said the lift came crashing down even before it reached the first floor. Yashoda’s right ankle bone was dislocated, her son, Rakesh said. adding that she was rushed to Hosmat Hospital where she is currently undergoing treatment.

“We are still trying to figure out what exactly happened. For now, my mother’s condition is important and very soon we will check with the officials about the maintenance of the elevator,” said Mr. Rakesh.

When asked if a complaint would be filed, Mr. Rakesh said they had still not decided and would discuss it with the family members before taking further action.

A police officer at the Ulsoor Gate police station said, “The capacity of the lift is said to be around 350 kg, but it was overloaded with people and hence crashed.

Other than Yashoda, four more people suffered minor injuries but went home after getting treated in a nearby hospital.”

He said that the family had not yet registered a complaint and action could be taken only after a complaint was lodged.
