The number of fires, major and minor, reported in April this year is the highest for the month since 2011. As many as 259 fires were reported till April 25, with the second highest being 205 fires in 2014.

The negligence of people is behind most fires, officials say. “The major cause for these fires is people burning garbage illegally, and setting grass on fire to clear the land for construction. Because of the heat, even the slightest breeze can cause such fires to spread,” K.U. Ramesh, Deputy Director (Technical), Fire and Emergency Services said. “There have been around seven to 10 fires reported per day in the past week, most of which are tree fires and open land grass fires,” said M.N. Reddi, Chief of Fire & Emergency Services. Following the Karnataka Fire Department’s Twitter account is enough to put one in a state of mild panic. Since January 1, 2016, 1,042 fires have been reported in the city. An analysis of number of fires reported in the past five years shows that March is generally the month during which the highest number of fires are reported.

The Fire and Emergency Services has taken to Twitter to improve responsiveness to fires, and has encouraged citizens to report incidents on social media.
