Civic staff clearing the road between Bangarappanagar and Banashankari 3rd Stage, which was filled with debris and plants on Sunday following a breach in Hosakerehalli lake.

A day after breach of Hosakerehalli lake, leading to flooding in the neighbourhood, Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA), the agency managing the lake, was asked to complete reconstruction of the bund and rejuvenation work at the earliest.

The breach resulted in a lot of inconvenience to residents living in low-lying Pushpagiri Nagara and Pramod Layout as their houses were flooded.

Mayor M. Gowtham Kumar met officials of BDA, BBMP, BWSSB and elected representatives on Monday.

Residents had alleged that the contractor who was supposed to redevelop the lake had failed to complete the work despite starting four years ago. Both residents and the BBMP had blamed faulty work by the contractor for the breach of the bund at 2 a.m. on Sunday.

In the meeting, BWSSB officials were asked to make sure that sewage from residential areas does not enter the lake. The BWSSB was asked to complete work of laying sanitary pipelines as early as possible. The Mayor warned of imposing a penalty on BWSSB if it allows flow of sanitary water into the lake.

BDA Commissioner G.C. Prakash said that the BDA is maintaining 32 lakes in the city. Barring Hosakerehalli, Bellandur and Varthur lakes, survey works of other lakes has been completed. The surveyed lakes will be handed over to BBMP. He added that encroachments in Bellandur and Varthur lakes have been cleared, CCTVs will be installed in the area and the BDA is in the process of appointing marshals. The BDA will transfer Varthur, Bellandur and Hosakerehalli lakes to the BBMP after completing rejuvenation work.
