BBMP wants property tax by DD or online payment

Come April 1, and the BBMP will collect taxes under the new slabs. However, this time, the civic agency will no longer be accepting cheques as payments. “Due to our past experience, where we ended up with several bounced cheques, we have done away with taking cheques,” said G. Kumar Naik, BBMP Commissioner.

However, citizens need not fret. They can visit the nearest branch of Canara Bank and pay the tax through either demand draft or cash.

Mr. Naik also announced that citizens who pay the entire tax by April 30 will get a five per cent rebate.

He also added that no BBMP official will be involved in the process of collecting the tax and everything had been outsourced to Canara Bank.

“People can pay their taxes online in just 10 minutes or they can visit the nearest branch of Canara Bank to make a payment,” he said and added that last year, BBMP collected over Rs. 200 crore online.

“In the new fiscal, we are hoping to collect Rs. 1,000 crore through the online mode,” he said.

The website will also help citizens calculate their tax after the hike and changes in tax slab. This will be integrated and available on the BBMP website by Friday.

Although there are several areas that have developed exponentially leading to an increase in guidance value, the properties will go from one zone to the next higher zone. “For example, if your property came under D Zone, it will now come under C Zone. This even though the guidance value matches that of areas under Zone B,” he explained.

Mr. Naik also cautioned that the bank is closed on April 1, April 2 is a Saturday followed by April 3 a Sunday. In effect, property tax collection would begin in earnest on April 4.

The BBMP helpline (22660000) will have four additional people trained to respond to queries related to property tax payments.

The helpline will function from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for two months, starting April 1, he added.
