In the coming week, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will set up two temporary night shelters for the homeless.
BBMP Commissioner N. Manjunath Prasad said two temporary shelters will come up within a week in locations where the concentration of homeless is highest. “The shelters will come up in rented buildings and will be an addition to the existing six shelters,” he said.
In the long run, the civic body is planning to set up more permanent shelter homes for the homeless. “We are waiting for the survey to be completed to decide the number of permanent shelters to be established. We will be requesting funds from the central government under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM) to set up the shelters. The one-time capital investment for construction will be made by the Centre, and the recurrent expenses will be shared on a 60-40 basis by the Centre and State,” Mr. Prasad said, adding that till now BBMP had been funding the six existing shelters.
After covering two zones, volunteers of Dream India Network and Impact India Consortium will be taking up the survey in East zone. In West zone 1,526 homeless persons were identified and 1,255 in South zone.
