Those floated earlier had failed to get a good response

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which is likely to float tenders for the management of solid waste generated in the city, is considering seeking the opinion of waste management experts and organisations. Officials are mulling over this idea after tenders that had been floated earlier failed to get a good response.

BBMP’s Special Commissioner (SWM and health) Sarfaraz Khan told The Hindu that Mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun had suggested seeking the opinion and suggestions of non-government organisations and waste management experts. “The tender document is ready. We will collate all their suggestions, vet them and incorporate them in the final tender document,” said Mr. Khan.

The final tender document will be sent to the Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister G. Parameshwara for approval. Mr. Khan said representatives from each zone and NGOs will be invited for an interaction. Citizens may also send in their opinions through post or via email to officials

Some of the suggestions that have already been made by experts include incentivising garbage contractors to support lane and community composting, and making them responsible for all black spots. Many experts have suggested that the BBMP involve Suchi Mitras and link workers at the ward level, and empower local health inspectors so that they can strictly monitor waste management.
