A long, winding journey that started six months ago with uncertainty, political debate and court cases over splitting of the BBMP will culminate on Tuesday when votes of the August 22 polls will be counted across the city.
Though voters seem less-than-enthused – just 49 per cent turned up at polling booths on Saturday – candidates and major political parties will be holding their breath. Will the BJP retain control of the council? Or, will the Congress-led State government get to exert influence on the civic authority? Will smaller parties get to play an important role?
The answers will be known around late noon when counting in 27 Assembly constituencies is scheduled to end. However, what will remain uncertain is the fate of the civic body. The State government is keen on trifurcating BBMP – the reason it cited to delay the polls.
