Surapura Srinivas, husband of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) councillor representing Devasandra ward Manjula Devi, was hacked to death by four armed men in broad daylight on Wednesday.

The police said that the victim, aged around 43 years, was attacked near a hair cutting salon near K.R. Puram Government College. They said the salon staff rushed Srinivas, who was said to be bleeding profusely after being attacked with lethal weapons, to Manipal Hospital nearby. However, he succumbed to grievous injuries.

It is said that Srinivas used to travel with a few of his supporters usually. But on Wednesday, he was alone. The assailants seized the opportunity, attacked him and fled the scene thereafter. According to eye-witnesses, the assailants left on motorcycles. Manjula Devi represented the BJP.

Police said the situation was tense around the area and additional police personnel were deployed on the spot to monitor the situation.

A special team has been formed to trace the assailants, said Harsha, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East).
