Bangalore police release two suspects after victims give clean chit

The investigation on the Fraser Town rape took a new turn when two suspects arrested on Thursday were given a clean chit by the victims on Friday. The police have also ruled out the involvement of two others, who have been named by the prime accused Hyder Nazir, since it has now emerged that he had named them because he was nursing a grudge against them.

A senior police officer said that the police, based on the information provided by the prime accused during questioning, had arrested Waseem Khan and Shiekh Ali, and subjected them to an identification parade. Waseem, a used-car dealer, had sold Nazir the car in which the alleged rape took place. Though Nasir took the car from Waseen, he had not paid him for it, and this had caused friction between them. Nazir, in order to settle old scores, had named Waseem as one of the associates present with him during the crime, the police said. Sheikh Ali, a real estate agent and a relative of Nazir, was also not on good terms with him, it is now learnt.

Imtiyaz and Ateeq, the other two named by Nazir, are friends–turned foes. “We have released Waseem and Ali on station bail, but have asked them to appear before the police officers whenever they are summoned,” a police officer said. Local residents had also staged a protest stating that the police were targeting innocents.

Nazir has provided a fresh list of names. “We have taken utmost care to gather information about the four suspects,” a senior police officer said, adding that this time, the names are accurate.
