An honest autorickshaw driver helped Bengaluru Railway Police unearth a suspected foreign currency racket on Sunday.
The racket was exposed when a passenger reached Bengaluru in Chennai Express and hired an autorikshaw from the pre-paid counter at Bengaluru City Railway Station to go to his house in BTM Layout.
While getting down, the customer forgot to pick up the bag kept behind the seat in the autorickshaw. The autorikshaw driver, Ramesh Kumar returned to the Railway Station and found the bag, unaware that the passenger had forgotten about it.
He later handed over the bag to the Railway Police, who upon verification, found around 4,100 Euro, 10,000 Malaysian ringgits, 2,99,000 Sri Lankan rupee and 45,805 UAE Dirhams with Rs. 11,000 cash.
The Railway Police lauded Ramesh’s honesty and felicitated him. They swung into action and with Ramesh’s help managed to trace the owner of the bag in BTM Layout.
“The accused claimed that he works for Forex in Chennai and the money is for official purpose,” Superintendent of Police, S.N. Siddaramappa said, adding that the Police have asked him to get proof of the money.
“We suspect that the money is part of a foreign currency racket and have asked for help from the Enforcement Directorate,” Mr. Siddaramappa said.
