An autorickshaw driver, who was declared brain dead after he met with an accident recently, has given a new lease of life to several others as his family donated most of his vital organs.

The donor, 23, who suffered a head injury in the accident on July 13, was rushed to a local private hospital for treatment. After two days, he was shifted to Apollo Hospital on Bannerghatta Road, where he was declared brain dead.

Following counselling, his family agreed to donate most of his vital organs. The organ retrieval was done at Apollo Hospital. His kidneys, lungs, liver, pancreas, corneas, heart valves and skin have been donated to benefit patients in Bangalore and Chennai. He is one of the donors who has donated the maximum number of organs and saved the lives of many.

According to a press release from the hospital, the organ retrieval procedure was highly complicated and challenging for the doctors as it meant retrieving multiple organs from a single donor in a limited time frame.

The organs that were retrieved were transported to different hospitals in the city and as well as to a private hospital in Chennai. One kidney and liver was transplanted at the donor hospital in a 62-year-old woman who was suffering from end stage kidney and liver diseases. The combined transplant was done on Tuesday and the patient is recovering.
