An army officer was duped of ₹10 lakh by a man who promised a seat for his son in a reputed medical college in the city.

The Lt. Colonel, posted in the Jabalpur army hospital, filed a complaint with the Ashok Nagar police on Wednesday. He was checking websites and social media for a medical seat for his son when a man, claiming to be Shoumakanth Mohanty, called. He promised him a medical seat if he was paid ₹30 lakh.

In the first week of September, the officer and his son met Mohanty in his office in Bengaluru. They were told that he was working as a clerk in the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA), and could get him a seat in Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute.

The officer paid ₹10 lakh while his friend paid ₹12 lakh separately for another seat. Mohanty took the cash and promised to keep in touch. Soon after that, his phone was switched off.

When the officer and his friend went to the college a few days later, they found that others too had been duped by the man.
