The city has been dumping waste in Bellahalli landfill for more than three years.

Residents who live near Bellahalli quarry pit, who have staged protests in the past over the dumping of Bengaluru’s waste in their backyard, are planning to hold another agitation on Monday. The BBMP has already intimated the police to ensure that garbage-laden vehicles are not prevented from entering the quarry pit. In the past, angry villagers who are worried about the health hazards have blocked trucks, bringing garbage collection in the city to a near halt.

Recently, Mahadevapura MLA Arvind Limbavali also staged a protest outside the quarry pit, demanding release of pending bills. Sources said the BBMP officials rushed to the spot and assured the MLA of releasing the pending bills for various village development works. They attributed the delay in clearing the bills to the delay in release of a portion of funds from the Centre.

Meanwhile, the 27-acre Bellahalli quarry pit is fast filling up. Senior officials of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) told The Hindu that mixed waste from the city may be dumped at Bellahalli for another 10 to 15 days. “An alternative site of around 2.5 acres has been prepared. Mixed waste from the city, sources said, may be dumped at this interim landfill, for at least three to five months,” said civic officials, adding that they are also preparing the 14-acre landfill at Mittaganahalli.
