Don’t question yoga just ahead of the yoga day! That seems to be the message Social Welfare Minister H. Anjaneya seems to be getting from both his political rivals and some of his own Cabinet colleagues.
The Bharatiya Janata Party pointed out that Chief Minister Siddaramiah and Health Minister U.T. Khader themselves had publicly stated that they performed yoga and questioned Mr. Anjaneya if “the Chief Minister and Health Minister were lazy and rich.”
“Going by Mr. Anjaneya’s logic one would have to come to the conclusion that his own party leaders — Siddaramaiah and Khader — are lazy,” BJP leader R. Ashok remarked at a programme organised by the party to include Kannada actor Bullet Prakash into the outfit in Bengaluru.
Meanwhile, Minister for Higher Education R.V. Deshpande termed as “unfortunate” Mr. Anjaneya’s comments on Wednesday that “yoga was only for rich and lazy people” and said there was no need to call people who practise yoga lazy.
Clarifying further, Mr. Deshpande said that he (Mr. Anjaneya) may have meant to say that farmers, construction workers and many others in extremely active work may not require yoga, but there was no need to say the others are lazy.”
“Yoga is not any party’s property. It is not new and the whole objective of promoting yoga is for good health. Maintaining health has become a challenge in the 21th century with the drastic changes in lifestyle, food and the environment,” Mr. Deshpande added.
Yoga is for lazy people, particularly those belonging to well-to-do families. They do not have sufficient time for exercise, including walking
