An Air Defence Surveillance Officer with the Indian Air Force was recently arrested by the Peenya police for alleged dowry harassment.
The accused has been identified as Pankaj Kumar (32). On December 4, his wife, Pammi Kumari (28), had ended her life by hanging herself at their residence in the Air Force quarters on Hesaraghatta Road. Though a case of unnatural death had been registered at the time, Pammi’s brother, Rakesh Roshan, came to the city on December 6 and alleged that Pankaj was harassing his sister for dowry.
Pankaj, a native of Bihar, had married Pammi in 2004 and has two children. On December 4, the couple had a bitter tiff following which Pammi went into her room. When she did not come out for a long time, Pankaj went to the room and found it locked. When he broke into the room, he found his wife hanging from the ceiling. He rushed her to a nearby hospital where it was recommended that she be shifted to another hospital. However, when she was taken there, she was declared dead.
Frequent fightsPammi’s relatives have alleged that her parents-in-law, Vinod Singh and Mahima Devi, were also harassing her for money. They claimed that the couple had frequent fights and suspect that these reasons could have led her to end her life. The Peenya police are investigating further into the allegations.
