The enforcement wing of the Commercial Taxes has unearthed tax evasion by commercial property owners and AC bus operators.

During recent inspections by the officials, they found suppressed turnover of ₹216.76 crore involving GST of ₹16.57 crore. “GST is payable on AC bus tickets at 5%. Officers inspected 26 AC bus operators and identified suppressed turnover of ₹174.4 crore and tax of ₹8.72 crore. The bus operators have collected taxes from passengers and understated the turnover in the returns and thereby failed to pay the collected tax,” said a release from Commissioner of Commercial Taxes Bengaluru.

The wing inspected 48 commercial property owners and identified tax suppression of ₹7.85 crore on ₹42.36 crore of commercial rent received. “GST is payable at 18% on commercial property rental income. Many of the property owners have collected taxes from tenants but failed to pay the same to the government,” said the release.
