Panic gripped residents of Ijoor in Ramanagaram for some time when passers-by found “explosive substances” abandoned near Ramgad Hostel on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway on Monday.

A bomb disposal squad, along with the police, rushed to the spot and after a detailed inspection found that the “explosives” were unused firecrackers abandoned by participants of a Ganesha immersion procession on Sunday.

According to the police, members of a local Ganesha mandali were taking a procession and burst firecrackers along the road. On the way, the organisers left a few unused crackers, a senior police officer said.

It was in June that NIA officials, along with local police, recovered two live bombs in a stormwater drain in Tippu Nagar.

Meanwhile, security at public places across the State has been stepped up following intelligence reports about a possible terror strike during Dasara festival.
