High school students of government schools from rural areas, many of which are cut off from the IT wave, got to have a tryst with science and technology institutions in the State capital this week during a three-day trip organised by the Sikshana Foundation.
The students visited Dell and Mindtree to get a feel of the work atmosphere and also some institutes, including ISRO and Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum (VITM).
Harisitha B. N. (12), a class seven student from Bilagumba in Ramanagar district, said that her favourite part of the trip was the metro ride. “I have never travelled in a metro train before. This was a great experience sitting in a train that goes so fast,” she said.

She also said that during the interaction with Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education Kimmane Ratnakar, she told him that their school did not have teachers for all subjects and that they did not have time to complete the portions for the examination.
Shrusti B.G. (13), a class seven student from Boohalli, Channapatna taluk was fascinated by the people in the “big” companies who were staring at their computer screens and typing. She also said that she was fascinated by the Wright Brothers’ aircraft and the other models at the VITM.
Prashanth Prakash, Chairman at Sikshana Foundation, said that the aim of the tour was to ignite a scientific temper and expose children to the urban lifestyle.
“We also invited several eminent personalities to speak about their life and how they managed to make a mark. We hope that this efforts would help motivate children who are in their formative years,” he said.
