A police constable attached to City Armed Reserve was arrested for stealing a pistol from Raj Bhavan, which belonged to his colleague way back in 2006.

The theft came to light when Purushtoham Rao was attacked by three drunk men after he objected to them urinating in public on February 17.

The Cottonpet police, who swung into action and arrested the three, also recovered a pistol from them. The trio confessed that they had beaten up Purushotham and escaped after snatching the pistol from him.

Based on this, the Cottonpet police questioned Purushotham who confessed that he had stolen the pistol from his colleague Dashrath Rao, a constable from Quick Reaction Team, when he was deputed at Raj Bhavan in 2006.

The police said that Purushotham had three cases pending against him and had a history of opening fire at the people on the pretext of maintaining law and order.

The accused constable might have threatened the trio with the gun which led to the scuffle, assault and robbery, a senior police officer said.
