A boon for sportspersons

May 20, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:02 am IST - Bengaluru:

The State government is all set to launch a 20-bed sports injury centre at the Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedics (SGITO).

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Health Minister U.T. Khader said although the centre will be formally launched after the gram panchayat polls, it had already started functioning. “Doctors at the centre have successfully treated a complex injury in the left knee joint of national judo player, Sangeetha, from Bogarahalli village near Hassan,” the Minister said.

Ms. Sangeetha, who was present at the press conference, said she was undergoing rehabilitation now. “This centre is a boon to players like me, who are unable to afford treatment in private hospitals,” she said.

SGITO Director B.G. Tilak said the institute would enter into a memorandum of understanding with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to reach out to sportspersons across the State. “We will soon write to all district hospitals to refer all sports injury cases to our institute,” Dr. Tilak said.
