A candle-making company in the city on Thursday unveiled a 10-foot candle weighing 250 kg in a bid to create a record.
The manufacturers, Sairam Candles, claimed that the white and gold paraffin wax candle could burn for 960 hours.
It took three people 96 hours to make it. “We plan a Guinness Book entry with one that will be about 14 or 16 feet in height,” said K. Ravi Varma, director, Sairam Candles.
The company employs homemakers, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
Addressing the media after unveiling the candle, C. Muniraju, another director of the company, said: “The purpose behind this giant candle is to create awareness about the importance of self-employment among the people in general, and women in particular.”
An employee with disability, Lakshmi Devi, said: “No one would employ me earlier. Now I earn Rs. 250 a day, which is more than enough to run my family.”
