A pre-university student S. Poornima died after being hit by a BMTC bus at Kempegowda Bus Station (KBS) on Monday around 7.45 a.m. She was heading to college to appear for her mathematics exam.

The 17-year-old was a resident of Balepete. She was dropped off at KBS in an autorickshaw. She was to board a bus to Mount Carmel College.

As she was trying to cross the road at the Sangam Gate entrance of KBS, a bus, coming from the direction of Krishna Flour Mill, took a right turn to enter KBS. She was hit by the rear of the bus. An autorickshaw driver rushed her to Victoria Hospital where she was declared brought dead. The BMTC bus driver did not even stop to check on her. Traffic police had a tough time identifying and tracking down the driver.

He was arrested in the evening and identified as Lokesh Gowda.

In a chilling turn of events, it emerged that Lokesh Gowda had been running regular trips through the day as if nothing had happened.
