Students beaten in school: Commission seeks report

The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has ordered an inquiry into the incident at the Government High School, Hoodi, where Class X students were beaten allegedly by their English teacher for failing to score well in the preparatory exam.

Taking suo motu cognisance of The Hindu ’s report on Thursday, Kripa Amar Alva, chairperson of the commission, summoned the teacher, Kantharaj K., the headmistress of the school Sarojamma H.S., the Block Education Officer, and the Deputy Director of Public Instruction as well the jurisdictional police inspector.

Block Education Officer South Range 4 said he had issued a notice to Ms. Sarojamma and asked her to submit a report of the incident.

Taken for treatment

According to sources, the teacher had allegedly beaten at least 75 of the 117 class 10 students because of their poor performance, and one of the students had to be taken to hospital for treatment.
