The police caned a group of autorickshaw drivers associated with the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, who protested in front of the Bangalore (Urban) Deputy Commissioner's office off K.G. Road demanding that the minimum auto fare be Rs. 20. The protesters turned unruly when the police prevented one of them from immolating himself, leading to the caning.
Activists of the Narayana Gowda faction of the vedike are unhappy with the minimum fare being fixed at Rs. 17. In fact, they had created a ruckus during the fare negotiations by the Deputy Commissioner on Friday.
Later, vedike activists sat in dharna at Ulsoor Gate Police Station demanding action against the policemen who had wielded the baton.
