The Congress and the Janata Dal (S) on Monday came together to protest against the hurried approval accorded to the various infrastructure projects at Saturday's Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Council meeting.
Opposition leaders from the two parties M. Nagaraj and Padmanabh Reddy led the protest.
The ruling BJP had approved 28 projects worth an estimated Rs. 2,000 crore amid pandemonium at the Council meeting.
The protesting councillors staged a dharna in front of the BBMP headquarters and raised slogans against Mayor S.K. Nataraj and BJP councillors.
Mr. Nagaraj alleged that the Mayor had approved the projects without any discussion. “The projects should not be passed and it is against Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act (KMC) 1976 which requires Standing Committees to approve them. These committees have not been formed yet,” he said.
Mr. Reddy said: “How can projects worth Rs. 2,000 crore be passed without our knowledge? We will take it to court.”
Both the leaders announced that they would stage an agitation in front of Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa's residence here on Tuesday.
A memorandum would be submitted to Governor H.R. Bhardwaj.
