On-demand bus service the next big thing?

The government is keenly observing the odd-even experiment in New Delhi to see if it can be pragmatically adapted for Bengaluru, says Home Minister G. Parameshwara. However, transport experts feel that more than the odd-even formula, it is the alternative shared mobility models New Delhi and Gurgaon are adopting that hold lessons for Bengaluru.

The survey-study conducted by WRI India has revealed that most of those using on-demand cabs are willing to shift to on-demand shuttle bus services.

“It need not always be the private sector. The biggest problem Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus commuters face is that they don’t know when the next bus will arrive. A simple solution of a mobile app which will inform you of the next bus and help you book a ticket will revolutionise the BMTC commute in the city,” said Pawan Mulukutla, manager (transport), WRI India.

The BMTC is working on installing GPS units in its fleet and implementing an Intelligent Transport System, which is likely to help create such a platform.

Gurgaon municipal administration has been experimenting with Ola Shuttle service for the past two months, where a commuter can book a seat on a scheduled bus route and the app will tell him/her when the bus will arrive. Meanwhile, ZipGo, a shuttle service provider, that had temporarily suspended operations after the Transport Department raided its offices, is back and has announced rides to Kempegowda International Airport from 14 locations in Bengaluru at Rs. 149 a seat.

Rejeet Mathews of WRI India had recently made a presentation to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah where the stress was on doubling the BMTC fleet to promote public transport.

Urbanist V. Ravichandar said, “These startups and the BMTC also should stop seeing each other as competitors and see it as an opportunity to collaborate to provide better shared mobility to the city’s commuters.”
