Mayor cracks the whip on trade licences

July 20, 2010 04:34 pm | Updated 04:34 pm IST - Bangalore:

Mayor S.K. Nataraj has appealed to the traders to apply for fresh/ renew their trade licences.

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had extended the deadline till June-end for the 39,000 establishments registered. “However, only 30 to 40 per cent of traders have done so. The deadline has now been extended to July-end,” he told presspersons here on Monday.

If traders fail to do so, the civic authority will initiate stringent action against them, slapping a penalty 25 times the fee as penalty, besides forcibly closing down their establishments. Moreover, the list of offenders will be published in localities urging the public not to trade with them. The list will also be handed over to residents' welfare associations to pressure the traders to obtain licences.

“There were some problems earlier in the erstwhile CMC areas, as there was no khata. BBMP is looking to solving them at the earliest. By doing so, the civic authority will be able to earn a revenue of at least Rs. 150 crore,” he added.

Mr. Nataraj said he has written to the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) advising earmarking 20 per cent of sites in its new layouts to be developed by it (BDA) for those who have lost all their property to road widening. The Government will have to approve the proposal though.

“I wrote to the BDA and the Government around 15 days ago. I have even discussed the issue with the city in-charge Minister. The proposal is still in the discussion stage,” he said.

Mr. Nataraj said BBMP would also review the roads identified for widening. “In the core area, we will take up a survey to look into the alternatives and necessity for road widening. It will be taken up only after a public consultation,” he said.
