Mahadevappa gets national award in agriculture

The “Life Agriculture Leadership Award-2009” for lifetime achievement was conferred upon noted agricultural scientist and former Vice-chancellor of the University of Agricultural Sciences-Dharwad, M. Mahadevappa.

The national award, instituted by the magazine Agriculture Today, was presented to Dr. Mahadevappa at a function organised in Delhi by Deputy Chairperson of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia on September 5.

Dr. Mahadevappa, who is former chairman of the Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board, came to be known as the father of hybrid rice in India. He was responsible for developing the first hybrid which paved the way for intensifying research in the field. The earlier recipients of the award were M.S. Swaminathan and Verghese Kurien.
