Mahaveer Jayanti was celebrated with religious fervour and devotion here on Sunday.

Members of the Jain community took out a procession on the main streets of the city carrying a portrait of Lord Mahaveer on a decorated palanquin. Folk artistes accompanied the procession beating drums.

Hundreds of devotees took part in the procession, which was flagged off by Trinetra Mahanta Swamiji of Bebi Math, at the Silver Jubilee Clock Tower. Members of the Jain Samaj held placards and shouted slogans in favour of non-violence and communal harmony.

All along the procession, volunteers distributed sweets to the onlookers and devotees. The procession which began from the Clock Tower culminated at the Vardhamanaiah Boarding passing through Gandhi Square, Ashoka Road and Halladakeri. A religious meeting was later held at the venue.

Another group of devotees took out a procession from the Town Hall premises. Caparisoned white horses were also brought in the procession, which culminated at the Dasara Exhibition Grounds.
