Nihal Majeed, daughter of a non-resident Indian (NRI) engineer, who was born and brought up in Abu Dhabi, cornered five gold medals at the 12th Annual Convocation of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) held here on Monday. “It was tough when I joined a college in India. Apart from being away from parents, I was exposed to a new environment, new food and new people. But, when the going gets tough, the tough get going,” said the dentistry student, sporting a big smile after receiving the gold medals from Governor Hans Raj Bhardwaj. Ms. Majeed joined Yenepoya Dental College in Mangalore soon after completing her 12th standard in Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in Abu Dhabi. “I stuck to my determination to do well and I am happy with my achievement,” she said as a battery of mediapersons zoomed their cameras on her. She intends to pursue her master's course in dental surgery and practise either in India or back in West Asia.
Her father Abdul Majeed, originally from Kochi in Kerala, looked on fondly. “It is a proud moment for me,” he said. Meanwhile, Ganne Prathyusha, a student of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, Bangalore, and T.G. Kavya of SDM College of Ayurveda, Hassan, bagged four gold medals each.
A total of 92 gold medals were awarded during the convocation. Also figuring in the list of recipients of multiple gold medals was Tripthi, a student of Government Dental College, Bangalore.
