Bengaluru: The cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposal to widen a 2-km stretch of Ballari Road between Windsor bridge and Hebbal flyover. The cabinet has approved a revised estimate of ₹27.52-crore for the project, up from ₹17-crore approved in 2008.

This comes close on the heels of a proposal to widen Jayamahal Road.

The project had earlier hit a road block because of the legal tussle over land acquisition, which included Bengaluru Palace grounds land. Briefing the media, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs T.B. Jayachandra said that widening and upgradation of the stretch would be taken up immediately, as the necessary land had been acquired.

Naresh Narasimhan, of Citizens for Bengaluru, said, “During widening of Ballari Road, we are ready to work with the government to save as many trees as possible. Most of the trees on the stretch are in a straight line and can be retained on the median, adding a new lane to the existing road. Others can be transplanted.”
