As part of the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, thousands of Ganesha idols were immersed in various lakes in the city on Sunday night.

A large number of idols were immersed in the Yediyur lake. The numbers were so big that we had to provide alternate entry points for people in addition to those provided by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), T.G. Krishna Bhat. The immersion went on till around 2 a.m., he added.

About 50,000 idols were immersed in the Sankey Tank. There was a huge rush at the Subramanyapura lake, the Lalbagh lake and a lake near Vidyapeeta. Special water tankers provided by the BBMP for immersion of idols were on the move throughout the night.

The rush is partly ascribed to a programme aired by a private Kannada television channel that said immersing the idol on the day was very auspicious.
