The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has earned a profit of Rs. 65.13 crore, with an annual income of Rs. 1,131.71 crore for 2009-10.
Announcing this here on Tuesday, Transport Minister R. Ashok said BMTC's accumulated profit till 2009-10 was around Rs. 625.21 crore, while the corporation's net worth was around Rs. 951.66 crore. He said that several schemes have been formulated for 2010-11. “We will introduce 400 new routes, besides adding 800 new buses to the fleet. For this, Rs. 200 crore has been earmarked.” The BMTC currently has a fleet of 6,063 buses, including 435 Volvos.
Mr. Ashok said the corporation had set a target to increase the revenue earnings to Rs. 1,250 crore. He added that recruitment for about 3,000 posts would also be held this fiscal.
He said that BMTC would spend Rs. 268 crore for construction of various buildings under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. Four new bus depots would be constructed at a cost of Rs. 12 core at Gunjuru, Kodati, Shivanapura and Nagarbhavi.
“Three depots will also be part of the Traffic and Transit Management Centre (TTMC) at Vijayanagar, Kengeri and Shantinagar. That apart, three new bus stations will be constructed at a cost of Rs. 12 crore at Vidyanagar, Laggere and Marathahalli,” he added.
The Minister said that the aim of BMTC was not only to make profits, but also to provide good facilities to commuters. “With that intention, we will construct bus stations of international standard and dedicate them to the public by December-end.
