The trailers are all over the channels and Milan Luthra has captured all the touchstones of the 1970s, including the famous “Bobby outfit” that makes a guest appearance in his Once Upon a Time in Mumbai .
Actors Prachi Desai and Emran Hashmi were in the city to promote the film and interact with the media before the film opens to audiences this Friday. The music has already created a stir, but according to Hashmi, the dialogues are fantastic, “I have never heard so many punch lines in one film,” he says. The movie has gone through some intense pre-production considering that it is a period film and had to be given a certain canvas. The film is said to be based loosely on underworld dons Haji Mastan and Dawood Ibrahim and has triggered some real-life drama as well with Suleman, Mastan's adopted son, demanding that the July 30 release be stalled, which was later rejected by a sessions court.
“The movie starts with a [disclaimer] that it is a [work of] fiction. We did not want to make it a biopic because that would restrict it,” said Hashmi.
Prachi Desai plays a shy, vulnerable, conservative Muslim girl in contrast to Hashmi's character of an aggressive thug. Ajay Devgn plays the role of a don and Kangana Ranaut, a Bollywood starlet who is his love interest.
