Hours after Bangalore Police Commissioner B.G. Jyothi Prakash Mirji announced on Saturday the arrest of six suspects in last week’s sexual assault of a law student on Bangalore University’s Jnana Bharathi campus, one of the two suspects who were absconding was shot and wounded in the wooded area of the campus.
The police said Rama (50), who was hiding next to the Microbiology Department near the Gandhi Bhavan, was shot after he attacked a constable while resisting arrest. With this, only one more suspect, Raja, remains to be arrested. Rama’s condition was described as stable, and he is in Victoria Hospital.
Timber smugglers
Earlier in the day, the Bangalore police claimed to have cracked the October 13 crime by arresting timber smugglers. Announcing the arrests here, Mr. Mirji said the description provided by the victim and her friend helped them zero in on the men — Mallesh (20), Maddura (20), Doddaheeraiah (19), Shivanna (20), Eeraiah (20) and Yeliyaiah (23) — all residents of Dasegowdana Doddi in Ramanagaram taluk. He described them as being involved in smuggling of timber from the university campus. They were arrested near the Revenue Office in Ramanagaram.
Phone recovered
Mr. Mirji said the police recovered the cellphone snatched from the victim.
The student told the police that on October 13 night, when she and her friend were sitting in a car, the armed gang of eight dragged her into the woods and raped her after sending the friend away to get his wallet from the car. Mr. Mirji said they had confessed to the rape under interrogation.
