BENGALURU: It can be called our own Swachch rankings.

As many as 65 communities are pitching themselves as sustainable ones that have a tick against good waste management practices, water conservation and other such parameters.

They are participating in a contest that aims to rank and rate communities in terms of the effort taken by residents to keep them clean, safe and eco-friendly.

Buoyed by the response, the organisers of ‘MyPlaceofPride’ have decided to extend the last day for registration from January 31 to February 15.

The contest is being jointly organised by the Rotary Bangalore Palmville and the Bangalore Political Action Committee (BPAC). The best of the lot will be announced in March.

Those excelling in individual parameters will also be recognised. These include communities - villas and apartment complexes - who have good track record of power management and fire safety.

Revathy Ashok, CEO and Managing Trustee, BPAC said they are focussing on residential complexes because they form a significant proportion of bulk waste generators, who in turn contribute 40% of the city’s waste.

“If we had to include individual houses, it would have been difficult to judge. Our questionnaire itself is a screening process. Water conservation and waste management are mandated by law, but other parameters too are considered. We are not focussing only on segregation, but also on responsible disposal,” she said.

The organisers have been conducting workshops on these topics since the launch of the initiative.

Once the registration process concludes, the organisers will conduct an opinion poll among residents of the complex as a verification process. This will be followed by a physical visit of the filtered list of communities. The final shortlist will be showcased.

“So far, registrations have come in from various parts of the city. We are concentrating on places with dense apartment complexes, such as Yelahanka, Bannerghatta Road, Whitefield, Outer Ring Road and HSR Layout,” Ms. Ashok added.
