Pre-monsoon showers have already claimed three lives in and around the city. While citizens are worried about floods and tree falls once the monsoon arrives in Bengaluru in full force, the civic body said that it has put measures in place.
An additional 63 temporary control room centres, apart from the existing nine, will be set-up to address rain-related complaints in the coming days, said the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), whose officials convened a meeting on Saturday.
Heavy rain in the past few days had led to tree falls, deaths and traffic chaos. BBMP officials said control rooms will be set up in each sub-division to attend to complaints rapidly. The number of teams to attend to fallen trees will be increased from 21 to 28, said a release.
BBMP Commissioner Manjunath Prasad has directed officials to heed reports sent by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, which has over 100 rain gauges in the city, and to conduct pre-emptive preparations. This includes clearing of drains in flood-prone areas where heavy rains are expected.
The Indian Meteorological Department predicts thunderstorm activity in the coming days.
