As many as 45,000 names, which were rejected for inclusion in the State electoral roll, came under the scanner of the Election Commission officials following an error on the commission website recently.
The names were rejected owing to non-residency status, but the reason on the site was “not being Indian”. This, sources said, had led to a formal complaint with the Election Commission which, in turn, referred the issue to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer here.
The complaint had also alleged that the names which were being shown as “non Indian” belonged to one community.
Sources said that a detailed examination of the 45,900 names, referred to during November/ December, 2018, did not have any communal angle and belonged to all communities and religions.
“Only in 30 cases, we found the reason for rejection was not being Indian citizens. In 27 cases, applications of Nepalese citizens had been rejected while in three cases Tibetan nationals had been rejected,” sources said, adding that the physical verification had shown that the others had been deleted because they did not reside in the mentioned address.
Following the complaint, sources said that the applications of the rejected cases were retrieved and a physical verification was done on the ground to ascertain the right reason for rejection.
