A total of 135 recruiters made 398 internship offers to students of the PGP programme of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB). The placement process was completed in a record time of three days in six slots for the class of 2015, the largest ever batch of the institute. Five students with more than 34 months of work experience opted out of the process. Last year, 126 companies offered internships to 377 students during summer placements for the class of 2014.

While 50 students are expected to intern at international destinations, the maximum number of offers were made in the sales and marketing domain (29 per cent). The hiring in this domain is up from 25 per cent last year, which made it the third-highest in the 2012 placements. Procter & Gamble and Hindustan Unilever hired 11 and eight interns respectively for domestic and international locations, an IIMB release said.

Around 23 per cent of the batch will intern in the management consulting sector (up from 22 per cent last year). The big recruiters this year were the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) with 15 offers, McKinsey & Co. with 11 offers, and Accenture Management Consulting with 10 offers.

Banking and financial services was the second-largest absorber, with 22 per cent of the batch getting offers from leading international banks such as UBS, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Barclays, Bank of America M.L., Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank, Citi Group and Nomura for investment banking and global markets and equities. Last year, the financial services segment had absorbed around 27 per cent of students.

Around 12 per cent of the batch will intern in general management and leadership profiles (up from 7 per cent last year). Aditya Birla Group, with 11 offers, was the top recruiter this year.

The IT sector saw a dip in hiring from last year’s 12 per cent, with this year’s figure being 7 per cent, the same percentage as the hiring in the operations domain.
