3 dead after drunk motorist runs over group of women in Bengaluru

One of the five women who was injured in the NICE Road accident succumbed to her injuries on Thursday evening. A speeding car had run over a group of seven women sitting by the street side on NICE Road on November 1 night. Two women, Gali Honnamma, 68 and Bindu, 28, were killed on the spot, while five were injured and hospitalised. Of them Reva Honnamma, 58, succumbed to her injuries on Thursday.

According to sources, the four others are under treatment at the hospital, but the condition of one woman, Rajamma, 76, is critical as she sustained internal injuries in the abdomen.

Meanwhile, Prem Kumar, 28, son of an electrical contractor, who was behind the wheel,

was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when the accident occurred. An alcometer test showed he had 145 mg/100 ml of blood alcohol levels much above 30 mg/100 ml blood, police said.

While he was driving on an incomplete stretch on NICE Road near Talaghattapura, not used by motorists, he saw a bike parked on the road and took a sharp right to avoid ramming into it. However, in doing so he mowed down a group of seven women. The group of women, all related to each other and residents of Varasandra, had put out ragi they grew to dry, packed them in gunny bags after dark and were sitting by the roadside and having dinner.

Police arrested the driver Prem Kumar, booking him for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and he has been sent to judicial custody. His friend Gagan who was in the car when the accident occurred, fled from the scene and is still at large.
