As many as 1,500 policemen will be deployed to provide security at the 72nd Independence Day celebrations at Manekshaw Parade Ground on Cubbon Road on Wednesday.
As many as nine Deputy Commissioners of Police and 16 Assistant Commissioners of Police are part of the 1,500-strong force that will keep vigil on and around the parade ground. In addition, around 50 surveillance cameras and four baggage scanners will be put up at strategic locations around the ground.
Nine KSRP platoons, five platoons of the City Armed Reserve force, and two Quick Reaction Teams have been deployed to monitor the law and order situation. As many as 46 police inspectors, 102 sub-inspectors, 77 assistant SIs, 540 constables, 75 women police constables, and 114 plain-clothes policemen will guard the parade ground round the clock, starting from Monday.
City Police Commissioner T. Suneel Kumar said the police have stepped up patrolling and surveillance on and around Manekshaw Parade Ground over the past fortnight as part of a sanitisation drive. Rapid intervention vehicles to monitor suspicious movements have also been deployed at strategic locations, he said.
Visitors are prohibited from carrying cigarettes, lighters, handbills, flags, video and still cameras, water bottles, eatables, firearms and explosive substances, colouring agents, black cloths, helmets, radios, mobile phones, and umbrellas.
The jurisdictional police at sensitive locations have been directed to step up vigil and keep a close watch on suspicious activities and people staying in lodges, hotels and dormitories.
The police have also made elaborate traffic arrangements to facilitate smooth traffic movement around the parade ground on August 15.
Vehicle parking in and around Cubbon Road and M.G. Road is prohibited. Because of shortage of parking place, participants and invitees have been requested to use public transport, Mr. Kumar said.
