The city police arrested 13 bouncers from a slum in Ashraya Nagar on Sunday for threatening a city councillor, Asha Suresh, and trying to stop her from canvassing in the area. The RMC Yard police have booked a case.

Ms. Suresh, councillor for HMT ward from Congress, has had a bitter tiff with R.R. Nagar MLA from Congress Muniratna and has been campaigning against him, favouring JD(S) candidate Ramachandra. However, she has not joined the JD(S) and is still a member of the Congress, she said.

On Sunday, she was seeking votes in Ashraya Nagar slum for the JD(S) candidate and was addressing an impromptu public gathering, when a gang of bouncers sitting in front of an Indira Canteen allegedly disrupted the meeting. “They began threatening the people who had gathered and when our workers questioned them, a tiff broke out. They threatened me with dire consequences if I continued to campaign and said I couldn’t enter the area. People locked them up in the Indira Canteen itself and the police later arrested them,” she said.
