108, 109 All India Championship Dog Shows to be held on Jan 11

Over 535 dogs representing over 44 breeds from across the country will contest in the 108th and 109th All India Championship Dog Shows being held on Sunday at the Hockey Grounds of Veterinary College of the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Science University, here.

The show is being organised by the Mysore Kennel Club, Bengaluru.

President of the Club, S. Yathiraj told presspersons here on Friday that the Mudhol Hound, canine pride of Karnataka, will be present in large numbers in these shows. Some of the rare breeds such as Maltese, Poodle, Jack Russel Terrier, Akita, Dogue de Bordeaux, in addition to popular breeds including German Shepherd, Golden and Labrador Retrievers, Daschunds and Dobermans will compete for championship. In the Junior Handlers section children between 12 and 16 will showcase their wards.

He said to attract the children, this time, cats, rabbits, colourful parrots and other pets, will be displayed at a stall. “We are also providing opportunity for veterinary and dairy college students to prepare a report about the show and the best reports will get prizes,” he said.

“Mudhol-Hound is popular breed of Karnataka which is recognised by the Kennel Club of India and is easy to rare. The Club wants to promote this breed and it has its credit in bringing this breed from the verge of extinction to international recognition," he said.

Director General and Inspector General of Police Lalrokhuma Pachuau and Vice-Chancellor of Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar C.Renuka Prasad will inaugurate the shows. Pharmaceutical companies, pet food manufacturers and others in the pet accessories trade will showcase their products. International-repute judges Ignor Selimovic from Croatia, Jagateshwar Singh and Philip John from India will be the judges.

Over 8,000 visitors are expected for the show which will be open between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Entrance fee for adult is Rs. 100 and Rs. 50 for students.
