As many as 10,572 students will not be allowed to appear for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) Examinations scheduled to begin on March 21 as they have shortage of attendance.
The Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB) stated that the students would not be issued admission tickets. The students will lose one academic year and have to appear for the SSLC examination in March 2020 after attending classes next academic year. They will not be allowed to write the supplementary examination in 2019.
Students have to have attendance of 75%. An official of the board said despite repeated warnings, these students did not have the stipulated attendance.
The number of students with attendance shortage has, however, reduced compared to the previous year as 16,811 students were not allowed to write the examination in 2018 for the same reason.
8.41 lakh to write the examination
A total of 8.41 lakh students have registered for the SSLC examinations scheduled to take place between March 21 and April 4. The number of students writing the examination has increased by 3,578 compared to the previous year. For the first time this year, students cannot wear digital watches. They will be allowed to wear only analogue watches.
Four schools in the dock
Four school managements appear to be in the dock as they have not been granted permission to run high school for the 2019-2020 academic year.
According to the data with the KSEEB, 34 students are enrolled in these schools and they may have trouble writing the SSLC examinations. While two of these schools are in Vijayapura district, one is in Tumakuru district and another in Mandya.
V. Sumangala, Director of the board, said that none of these school managements had approached the board. “If the students approach us, we will make alternative arrangements for them,” she said adding that the department’s officials had submitted reports stating that these schools are not functioning.
