The Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) said it has paid ₹10 lakh as compensation to the family of a security guard who died when a gate crashed on him.
This was conveyed by email to students, who had undertaken a sit-in protest on Wednesday against the “indifference of the administration” after contractors accused of negligence in the case continued to work for the premier science institute. The day-long protest was called off on Wednesday night.
In a mail to students, the registrar of the institute said that ₹10 lakh had been paid to the dependants of 23-year-old Gautam Biswal who died when a 500-kg sliding gate fell on him. Furthermore, they were assured that a committee, with two external and two internal members, has been formed to to investigate the reason for the accident, and action would be taken based on the report.
However, the protesters’ demand for a student representative in the committee has been rejected.
“We had placed this demand to ensure transparency in the proceedings and the report. While we are not happy about this, we have been assured that the interim report will be made public,” said a student protester.
