G. Ashok (19) was killed in an accident on the National Highway on Thursday.

The traffic police said that the deceased, a resident of Sarada Nagar in Marikavalasa, was going on a motorcycle to a temple at 7 a.m. to offer prayers on the occasion of the New Year and ‘Vaikuntha Ekadasi’, when he was hit by a car from behind.

He was shifted to a hospital with grievous injuries, but breathed his last soon after admission.

“We partied on the New Year eve and Ashok cut the cake as the clock struck 12. We woke up to the tragic news in the morning,” said his friends.

The police have booked a case and are on the lookout for the car driver.

Drunken driving

The traffic police booked 196 motorists on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday for drunken driving.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) K. Mahendra Patrudu said that 40 teams were on the job with breath analysers at 27 spots in the city.

The ADCP said that out of the 196 cases, over 60 per cent was registered on the Beach Road stretch between Tenneti Park and Rushikonda.
