A sense of responsibility is all that one requires in making the campaign ‘Swachch Bharat’ successful. To take the drive forward in an effective manner, local NGOs, student community and youth organisations should come together as a team and help create awareness on hygiene aspects among people.
This was the main topic discussed at a debate organised by the India Youth for Society (IYFS) to mark ‘National Youth Day 2015’ on Saturday. A team of representatives from various voluntary organisations such as Green Soldiers, Generation Yuva, Oneness, Good Governance and Green Pals Club, among others made their way to Visakhapatnam Public Library to debate over diverse themes. Environmental issues, dire consequences of open defecation in slum areas, disorganised waste management system and concrete measures to be taken by the stakeholders to build awareness on ‘Swachch Bharat’ were some of the points brought to the fore during the session. Adding value to the ongoing project, IYFS has adopted Ward No. 3 recently. Apart from cleaning the streets and educating people on garbage maintenance, the society has so far planted over 370 saplings in the ward.
Participants of the programme felt that the cleanliness drive should start from within and that it should bring in social inclusion and promote community building. Among others, president of society P. Madhu, secretary M. Jagadish Kumar and Appala Reddy participated.
